MONOGRAPHY
JEAN-CLAUDE ELOY
WORKS FROM THE EIGHTIES
WARSAW AUTUMN FESTIVAL
16th AND 17th SEPTEMBER 1994
The
"Warsaw Autumn" - an International Festival of Contemporary
Music - will propose its 37th edition next Septembre, opening on the
16th and 17th with four concerts dedicated to the composer Jean-Claude
Eloy, focusing on his works from the eighties.
The cycle entitled "Anâhata" - which was not performed
again since its integral presentation at the Donaueschingen Festival
1990 -, will be proposed under a version specially realized for Warsaw.
During the eighties, the composer went radicaly his way towards an integration
of traditional musicians belonging to non-western civilisations, respecting
their acoustic specificities, but confronting them with western modernity,
invention, freedom, and tranformations of the music idioms and new technologies.
In an inverse and complementary direction, he worked with musicians
coming from the western world, but whose researches are leading beyond
the usual limits of their own culture, standardized instruments, or
vocal technics. Both sources were combined in parallel with an intensive
work inside different electroacoustic studios, offering a wide variety
of technologies and tools. This type of approach was possible only through
multiple international collaborations: WDR-Cologne, Studio für
Elektronische Musik (for "Erkos"); Technische Universität
TU, Berlin; Studio of the Sweelinck Conservatory, Amsterdam (for "Anâhata");
Instituut voor Sonologie, Utrecht (for "Yo-In"); etc ...
It is therefore a true contemporary approach which aims at enlarging
and overpassing the admitted border lines: cultural, ethnical, geographical,
vocal, technological, of time proportions and perceptions, etc
"Music Beyond Borders" is thus the correct title chosen by
the composer at the head of his activity.
It is the first time that the works by Jean-Claude Eloy are entering
inside the geopolitical space which composed the former Eastern Europe,
except for the Zagreb Biennial (which received the composer as early
as 1979), and the Eloy's concerts organized in 1992 at the Zeiss-Grossplanetarium,
in the former East-Berlin.
